Job Title: Heavy Equipment Operators

Strange Bros. Grading Co., Inc. has been a leader in site development throughout South Carolina since 1954. We’re looking for skilled and dependable Heavy Equipment Operators to join our Field Crews operating on several jobsites throughout the upstate of South Carolina.

Position Summary

Our Heavy Equipment Operators play a vital role in daily field operations by safely and effectively operating various types of heavy construction machinery. This role works directly under the supervision of the Superintendent and collaborates closely with field team members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy machinery such as excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, and loaders with accuracy and care.
  • Perform daily inspections of equipment before and after use; report issues to Equipment & Fleet Services.
  • Ensure all equipment is maintained, cleaned, and ready for operation.
  • Read and interpret plans, grade stakes, and machine specifications.
  • Monitor material levels and grade accuracy using hand signals or instruments.
  • Follow company and OSHA safety protocols at all times.
  • Transport materials and equipment safely on job sites.
  • Assist with other jobsite related tasks and duties as directed or assigned by the Superintendent.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience operating heavy equipment (grading experience preferred).
  • Solid mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Ability to read construction plans, safety instructions, and equipment manuals.
  • Strong communication skills and a team-focused attitude.
  • Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation to job sites. CDL preferred but not necessary.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Comfortable working in all weather conditions and outdoor environments.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and operate equipment for long periods on uneven terrain.
  • Clear vision (or corrected vision) for reading plans and operating equipment safely.
  • Willingness to work overtime and Saturdays as needed.
